To offset the curse that makes her a serpent from the waist down one day each month, Melusine, exiled Princess of Strathclyde, must seduce and wed a mortal knight, the shrewd and ambitious Sigefroi of Ardennes. To force Sigefroi to marry her, Melusine defeats him in single combat (using a magic sword) and in exchange for his life, exacts from him a promise to marry the princess who will knock at his door in a few days. Then she removes her helmet. Humiliated, Sigefroi realizes he was defeated by the beautiful maiden he sighted naked in the river a few days past.
