Perilous Facts
Thea Pritchard, a retired magazine fact-checker, is carrying around a ghastly secret that she’d prefer to keep buried forever. But the vile incident from her past continues to take up far too much space inside her head. She’s happy enough living alone in her small family cottage by the lake in Sandbar Beach. She relishes her quiet lifestyle and is most content while amongst a select group of friends, with whom she’s writing a single woman’s self-help book. And her sweet pug dog Pansy is just enough company. Thea finds plenty to fill up her days, and has never been troubled with feelings of loneliness.
Or so she likes to believe.
On the morning that an image resembling the Blessed Virgin Mary appears on the granite rock in Thea’s beachfront garden, the lakeside resort town, as well as Thea’s quiet cottage home, are suddenly under siege by the media, and by the pilgrims who flock to the site of the apparent modern-day miracle. Thea, who would like nothing more than to be left alone, finds herself caught up in all the miraculous drama that’s taking place right outside her front door.
The lives of so many residents of Sandbar Beach begin to unravel and fracture because of Thea’s granite rock. Threats are made and questions are asked, and ultimately someone pays the price with their life. And somehow Thea, who is trying her hardest to enjoy her retirement and forget her past, is suddenly caught up in the intrigue.
Who, she wonders, stands to benefit most because of that so-called ‘miracle’? It doesn’t help matters when she’s the one who stumbles across the dead body of a local man with ties to her earlier life. She’s then forced to face yet another man she knew years back, Eddie Kitson, the detective involved in the case, from whom she is hiding a painful secret.
Thea’s fact-checking background begins to surface again as she questions facts and alibis and tries to determine exactly how the image on the rock could have had such an impact on the fortunes of so many people in town—and how one of them ended up dead. Many of the local townsfolk are not above suspicion as the murder investigation continues. So many coincidences, close calls and crossed paths all become links that thwart Thea at every turn.
Unnerved by a bloody chisel left beside her rock, she resolves to unearth the suspects and motives in the confounding case. Her own investigation parallels that of Detective Eddie Kitson, and raises uneasy questions in Thea’s mind about the wisdom of her choices regarding a critical decision she made many years ago. Will she ever escape the toll that the notorious Albert Noble has taken on her life? Will she ever be able to tell Eddie the truth about what actually happened that summer so long ago?
Thea Pritchard must step out of her own comfort zone if she can ever hope to make any sense of what’s happening in Sandbar Beach this summer. A daunting task for someone who fiercely protects her solitude while trying to forget a past that’s suddenly come back to haunt her.
